Maintaining healthy lung in neuromuscular diseases

Biography :

TK Kwok is currently the consultant in Division of Rehabilitation, Department of Medicine in Tung Wah Hospital Hong Kong. He is also the Associated Professor in Department of Medicine, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong. He is the in-charge of the only Motor Neuron Disease Unit in Hong Kong providing in-patient care for terminal Motor Neuron Disease patients.

Abstract :

Respiratory functions of neuromuscular diseases patients inevitably deteriorated over time. This leaded to morbidity & mortality, at the same time, jeopardized the quality of life of these patients. Maintaining good pulmonary function is one of the major treatment goals of these patients. Maintaining the compliance of the chest and lung as well as adequate clearance of respiratory secretion are the two main directions in the management of these patients. Non-invasive measures and medications with least side effect are preferred. Careful selection of convenient but useful assessment tools, apply effective but feasible treatment protocol are the key factors to improve compliance. Furthermore, good communication with patients and caregivers is important to ensure adherence to treatment. Finally, holistic treatment plan which incorporated other needs of these patients are essential.
