Abstract :

This audit was started as an audit for sending the placenta for histopathology in cases of severe fetal distress requiring NICU admission. The aim was to verify the adherence to the RCPath guidelines for sending placental histology. It was a retrospective audit conducted over a period of six months. The audit was registered with clinical effective unit and data was analysed. It was found that out of 200 babies admitted to NICU, 31 of them were severe fetal distress fulfilling the criteria of the definition as per RCPath guidelines. The conclusion was that placental histology was sent only in 30% of cases. The recommendations were to improve staff awareness and training. The re-audit was done which showed the compliance has improved to 60%. Following this, a QIP was initiated in which the trust guidelines and referral form for placental histology were revised.
