Type 1 diabetes mellitus is a chronic autoimmune condition in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. As a result, the pancreas produces little to no insulin, a hormone essential for regulating blood sugar levels. Without insulin, glucose cannot enter the body's cells to be used for energy, leading to high levels of sugar in the bloodstream (hyperglycemia)
