Abstract :

Background: Thrombocytopenia is a life threating problem in pediatric patients. It is caused by different aetiologias. Its overall incidence is 0.7-0.9% but up to 22-35% in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) especially preterm.
Aim: To know causes of decreased platelet count in children in different age groups. Methods: 55 pediatric patients were involved aged from 3-10 years who attending regular follow up at hematology clinic.
Results: Immune mediated thrombocytopenia (ITP) was the commonest cause in children either primary or secondary to SLE or drug induced. In neonates, neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (NAIT) was common. Other causes include hemolytic uremic syndrome, DIC, sepsis, hypersplenism, vascular anomalies (hemangioma) , storage diseases and infections.
Conclusion: A etiology of thrombocytopenia should be diagnosed early because many of them are treatable and to prevent miserable complications such as intracranial hemorrhage.
